Google Just Put an Answer Above Your Organic Result

AI Overviews are rolling out and the informational traffic you've spent years building is the first thing they take. What survives is more specific than you'd expect.

Google has begun placing AI-generated answers above the organic results. It's early, the rollout is uneven, and the quality varies. What isn't in doubt is the direction: for a growing set of queries, the user gets their answer without visiting anyone's website. If your organic strategy was built on informational content, this is the moment it changes.

What gets absorbed first

Queries with a single, stable, uncontroversial answer. 'What is [concept]', 'how does [process] work', 'difference between X and Y'. These are precisely the queries most B2B content programmes were built to win, because they had volume and were achievable without domain authority. The traffic from them was always low-intent; now a lot of it simply won't arrive.

What it can't absorb

Anything where the answer depends on the reader's specifics, anything requiring interaction, and anything where trust in the source is part of the value. A generated summary cannot run your numbers through a calculator. It cannot show you the actual migration screens. And for a decision involving real money and personal career risk, buyers want to see who is making the claim โ€” a synthesised paragraph doesn't provide that.

  • Interactive and calculable content, where using it is the point
  • Anything requiring your specific product's interface or data
  • High-stakes evaluation content where the identity of the source matters
  • Recent, changing information that a summary is likely to get wrong

Getting cited rather than replaced

The overviews cite sources, and being cited is now a legitimate objective in its own right. In practice that rewards content that's clearly structured, makes specific and quotable claims, has visible authorship and expertise, and is genuinely the best available source for a narrow question. That's not far from what good SEO always rewarded โ€” the difference is that the payoff is now brand exposure rather than a session.

Prepare leadership before the graph moves

Organic sessions are going to fall for many B2B sites this year regardless of what the marketing team does, and that decline will land in a monthly report and be interpreted as failure. Explain the mechanism now, change what you report toward impressions, branded search and pipeline influence, and you'll be having a strategic conversation rather than defending a chart. Doing it after the drop is a much harder position to argue from.

The traffic that disappears first is the traffic that converted worst. That's genuinely reassuring, and it's no comfort at all to a team whose targets are set in sessions.
